Sullivan Chimney Fire
(Sullivan) – A stubborn chimney fire in Sullivan activated fire departments from Steuben to Lamoine yesterday. Sullivan and Sorrento firefighters responded to Taunton Drive at quarter to seven yesterday morning. The fire was in an old church, and it was under control in about half an hour. Joining the effort were firefighters from Gouldsboro, Hancock and Winter Harbor, while Franklin, Steuben and Lamoine all stood by for coverage in case other calls came in during the stormy morning.
Workers Exposed
(Baileyville) – A buildup of toxic chlorine dioxide gas at a mill in Baileyville sent 18-workers to the hospital yesterday. They’ll be OK – the exposure was brief. The incident came during a planned mill shutdown when an area of the Woodland Pulp Mill was not properly ventilated. The workers got treatment at the Calais Regional Medical center which had prepared for a mass casualty incident on a regular basis.
Fairfield Fire
(Fairfield) – A Fairfield family is homeless after a fire tore through their home yesterday. A heater used to dry hockey equipment is blamed for starting the blaze. WABI-TV reports a dog and a cat perished in the fire, but no humans were hurt. A youngster had turned on the heater, went to shower up and returned to find the room with the heater on fire.
Lamoine – Marijuana Question
(Lamoine) – Not a lot of interest in an upcoming referendum vote in Lamoine on whether the town should allow commercial marijuana sales. One of the five Selectmen issued a prepared statement opposing the question at last night’s public hearing to which no members of the public showed up to speak. Voters will decide on March 7th whether to enact an ordinance that would bar commercial marijuana sales and cultivation following passage last November of a statewide ballot question to allow for recreational pot use.
Snow Bowl – DEP Fine
(Camden) – An expansion project at the Camden Snow Bowl completed a couple years ago will result in nearly $50-thousand dollars in fines against the Town of Camden and a contractor. The Bangor Daily News reports the $6-and-a-half million dollar project cleared about 15-acres, and polluted a nearby pond with the runoff. The town hopes to negotiate with the Department of Environmental Protection to establish a new wetland area in lieu of paying a fine.
Channel 5 Sold
(Bangor) – Maine’s oldest TV station will soon have a new owner. Diversified Communications which owns WABI-TV, Channel five, and a TV Station in Florida, is selling both stations to Gray Television for $85-million dollars. Gray owns about 100-TV stations across the nation, including WAGM-TV in Presque Isle which at one time was owned by the Hildreth Family that owned Channel 5. No word on plans for the Bangor station once the new ownership moves in.
