Winter Storm
(Ellsworth) – School superintendents are taking no chances in Hancock County today, calling off classes for the day before the first flake of snow falls. A winter storm warning is posted, and the snow is expected to start falling at about 10-o’clock this morning in Hancock County. National Weather Service
For some schools, this will be a 2nd straight closure day, as some never opened yesterday while others waited a couple hours to open.
Waldo Death
(Waldo) – A 43-year old man is dead in the Town of Waldo, and state police are investigating. WABI-TV reports county deputies responded to the Kendall Corner Road after a 9-1-1 call last night and found Edwin Littlefield’s body outside a home. He was from Belmont. State Police detectives spent the overnight conducting interviews, and the medical examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy on Littlefield’s body.
Cruise Ship Petition
(Bar Harbor) – A petition has started circulating in Bar Harbor to limit the number of passengers and cruise ships. The Mt. Desert Islander reports the petition needs to gather nearly 250-signatures to make its way onto a town meeting ballot. The town is currently negotiating with the owners of the former Bay Ferries terminal to convert it to a facility that can handle large cruise ships. A record number of cruise ships is expected again next summer in Bar Harbor.
Winter Carnival
(Ellsworth) Today’s winter storm is a welcome sight to those participating in Saturday’s Winter Carnival in Ellsworth. Ellsworth Recreation Commission chair Uriah Hon says the day starts with the kid-favorite Cardboard Sled Races at the Woodlawn Museum in Ellsworth. Indoor events include story time and crafts at the Ellsworth Public Library at Noon, and activities at the Moore Community Center on State Street, put on by Union Square, from 1 to 4pm. Skating events at the Knowlton Park Ice Rink begin at 1 o’clock. And the fireworks finale is at 6pm from the Ellsworth High School.
Moose Lottery Permits
(Maine) The 2017 Maine moose permit lottery application process is now open. The online application process is said to be fast and simple and you’ll receive instant confirmation that you’ve successfully entered the lottery. Applicants are awarded bonus points for each consecutive year that they’ve applied for the lottery since 1998 without being selected, and each bonus point gives the applicant an additional chance in the drawing. The moose permit drawing will be June 17th at Caribou Parks and Recreation. To apply, log on to ME Fish Wildlife dot Com; the deadline is just before midnight on May 15th.
Assisted Living Fire
(Bar Harbor) A scare at a Bar Harbor nursing home Wednesday morning with reports of smoke coming from the hallway and attic of the building. The Mt Desert Islander reports four area fire departments responded to Sonogee Rehabilitation and Assisted Living Facility on Eden Street. Crews found a small fire in the wall of an electrical equipment room and extinguished it quickly. No injuries reported.
Drugs & Gun Charges
(Portland) A Minot man was sentenced Tuesday for drug trafficking and possessing a firearm. Court records say in August 2014 police responded to a home invasion at the residence of Ross Tardif in Minot. Tardif was not home at the time and police discovered over 375 grams of cocaine, over 650 Oxycodone pills, and over 14 kilograms of marijuana inside the house. The drugs were seized and, upon arriving home, Tardif admitted to selling drugs and owning a gun to protect his drug activities. The 30-year-old Tardif will spend 7-and-a-half years in prison followed by 3 years of supervised release.
Drug-Probation Arrest
(Augusta) Augusta police seized 16-thousand-dollars worth of heroin and put a repeat drug offender back in jail. On Tuesday a probation check at a home on School Street found 28-year-old Lindsay Fortin in possession of drugs, paraphernalia and cash, violating her probation. As a result of the investigation 24-year-old Brandon Darveau was also arrested. He’s charged with Aggravated Trafficking and Criminal Forfeiture, and his bail was set at 50-thousand-dollars cash.
Pellet Theft Arrest
(Ashland) An Aroostook County man was arrested for stealing wood pellets from his employer then selling them on his own. Ashland police tell the Bangor Daily News on January 30th they caught 22-year-old Kyle Bell loading heating pellets into his vehicle at the storage facility for Northeast Pellets. Police say it wasn’t the first time and allege Bell stole at least $350 worth of wood pellets and sold them at below-market prices. Bell was charged with theft and has since been released from jail. The owner of Northeast Pellets is offering to replace pellets for free to anyone who bought them from Bell in exchange for their cooperation in the case.
Home Invasion Arrests
(Brunswick) Three men were arrested early Wednesday morning after police allegedly caught them fleeing from a Brunswick home where a burglary had just been reported. The Bangor Daily News reports a homeowner on School Street returned home to find 2 men inside the house. The resident flagged down a Brunswick police officer who got to the scene just in time to see 24-year-old Casey McEnery and 18-year-old Damian Grubb leaving through the back door. McEnery was apprehended but Grubb kept running had to be stopped at gunpoint. Both men are charged with Felony Burglary and Refusing to Submit to Arrest. The getaway driver, 22-year-old Jeremiah Munsey of Bowdoinham, was arrested on outstanding warrants.
Mouse House
(Ellsworth – A topping out ceremony is set for next Wednesday in Ellsworth as the Jackson Lab progresses on renovation of the former Lowe’s building into a major new facility. The Ellsworth American reports construction crews have started converting the former garden center into a utilities plant, and a steel skeleton is under construction inside the building for a second floor of new space. The mouse production facility is expected to open early next year and employ more than 230-people.
Marine Patrol Position
(Lamoine) – Ever want to be a Marine Patrol officer? The Department of Marine resources hopes to fill two positions for the 2017 summer season. There are openings in Eastern Hancock County and in York County, and a possibility that the job will continue through September. Applicants must be at least 20-years old and have a clean record.
