Drug Evidence
(Ellsworth) – The attorney for an accused heroin dealer says Marine Patrol officers had no valid reason to stop his client last September, so a judge should toss out any evidence collected. Russell Golden is accused of drug trafficking and two of the other three people in the vehicle also face charges. The Mt. Desert Islander reports attorney Don Brown represents Golden who is from Connecticut. Brown said the claim that Golden was driving erratically was not enough of a reason to pull him over in Trenton. Police found 200-bags of heroin and $11-hundred dollars in cash.
Bank Robbery Anniversary
(Ellsworth) It’s been 3 years since the Key Bank was robbed on High Street in Ellsworth. Detective Dotty Small with the Ellsworth Police Department says the suspect parked in the LL Bean parking lot for about 20-minutes in a crew cab pickup truck, then entered Key Bank and demanded money. He put the money in a lunch cooler, then got in his truck and drove toward Bangor. Anyone with information should contact the Ellsworth Police Department and you may remain anonymous.
Invasive Plants
(Maine) Thirty-three plants in Maine have been deemed invasive by the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry. Ellsworth Garden Club president Mary Blackstone says she’s pleased with the legislation because plants like Asian Bittersweet are taking over our area. Blackstone says homeowners can help by reviewing the list of invasive plants then remove those from their property. She says there are wonderful alternative native plants that can be used instead.
Jasper’s Closing
(Ellsworth) After nearly 60 years in business Jasper’s Restaurant in Ellsworth will serve its last meals tomorrow. Owner Troy Adams says it’s been a good run since his grandfather Jasper opened the business in 1957. The restaurant evolved over the years – Adams says the Carousel Lounge was popular in the 60’s, then in the late 70’s his mother and step-father ran it as more of a family restaurant thru the late 90’s. Adams says they’re considering a closing party next weekend for invited guests.
Meth Lab
(Hermon) – A 28-year old Hermon man is charged with operating a meth lab that police and others spent much of yesterday dismantling. Penobscot County Deputies initially responded to a well-being check request on the New Boston Road to make sure children living in the home were OK. They discovered Franklin Avery’s meth making setup in the home’s basement where he lived. DHHS oversaw care of the children. It’s the 6th meth lab bust in Maine this year – the state saw a record 125-meth making operations dismantled last year.
New Subdivisions
(Ellsworth) – Planners in Ellsworth have approved a 9-unit apartment building but want more information about a 7-townhouse subdivision. The apartment house will locate at Kingsland Crossing behind the soon to open China Hill Restaurant in the old Hilltop House building. The town house project is proposed for Washington Street behind the Ellsworth Shopping Plaza and would have two units per unit. Storm water issues need to be addressed before moving forward.
Body ID’d
(Augusta) State Police and the State Medical Examiner’s Office says the decomposed body found in Thomaston last week was a transient who was last seen leaving the Knox County Jail in May. Public Safety Department spokesman Steve McCausland says Joshua Robichaud’s death is not considered suspicious. The positive ID came from work conducted by the State Police DNA lab. Robichaud’s remains were found in a wooded area off Route 1 in Thomaston. He was arrested in May 2016 in Lewiston on outstanding warrants from Knox County.
PWM Record
(Portland) The Portland International Jetport says it’s reached a record year for passenger traffic in 2016. It recorded 1,785,649 passengers. That’s more than 2015’s total of 1,728,746 passengers, an increase of 3.2 percent. The previous record was set in 2008 at 1,762,925 passengers. Airport officials says some factors contributing to the passenger traffic are American Airlines adding a second daily Charlotte flight; Elite Airways adding non-stop service to Sarasota, Florida, and expanding its service to Melbourne, Florida; Southwest Airlines extended its summer schedule through November; and United Airlines adding larger aircraft on flights to Chicago, Newark and Washington.
