Acadia Bill
(Ellsworth) – Maine’s Congressional Delegation says a bill to clarify a number of things in Acadia National Park should pass easily once the full Congress gets it. Worm and clam harvesters are especially interested after park rangers last year started ordering them off the flats that border the park. The bill makes it clear that the intertidal zone belongs to the State which regulates harvesting. The bill will also approve acquisition of the Schoodic Woods section of the park added a couple of years ago, but without the required Congressional approval. Senator Angus King and Congressman Bruce Poliquin appeared in Ellsworth yesterday to talk with local leaders about the bill.

Marc Blanchette says he worked with Superintendent Dan Higgins to set up a taste test at Ellsworth Elementary Middle School last week, offering vegetarian Not So Sloppy Joe’s as an alternative to the meaty classic. Blanchette says school lunches need healthier options. Middle schoolers were offered the Not So Sloppy Joe’s last Thursday, and Blanchette says the kids who actually tried it gave the meal a positive review.

Pot Rules
(Maine) Recreational use of marijuana is legal in Maine now, but there’s some confusion about how much you can use, who can use it, and where you can use it. Police departments from Ellsworth and Milbridge posted information on their Facebook pages with details about what’s legal and what’s not, such as driving and smoking pot – that’s still illegal. Yes, you can grow it yourself – you’re allowed to have 6 mature plants, 12 young plants, and an unlimited number of seedlings at any given time, but you can’t grow it where it’s visible by neighbors and you have to prevent access by anyone under 21.

Coach Arrested
(Standish) A cheerleading coach at a southern Maine school is accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a student. WABI-TV reports the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office arrested 21-year-old Nicholas Perry of Standish, charging him with gross sexual assault and unlawful sexual contact. (Washington ) – Fire investigators say they’re unable to pinpoint the cause of last week’s fire that killed a father and son in the Knox County town of Washington.
