Tremont – Police
(Tremont) – Petitioners in Tremont want the town’s Selectmen to get a new police contract next year. The Mt. Desert Islander reports 89 voters signed, asking the town to contract with the Town of Southwest Harbor for police protection. Tremont signed a contract for patrol services from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, but that’s only for a set number of hours a week. Southwest Harbor submitted a higher bid, but the coverage would be round the clock. When the patrol deputy isn’t on duty, the town is covered by the State Police or the Sheriff’s Department depending on the day, and there isn’t necessarily a trooper or deputy in town.
Ryker’s Cruise
(Steuben) – A 5-year old Steuben boy suffering from a terminal illness is taking a Disney cruise this week. Firefighters and motorcyclists escorted Ryker Chase from his home to Bangor International Airport this weekend as he flew to meet the cruise ship in Florida. Businesses in Ellsworth put messages on their signs wishing Chase a safe trip. The Red Knights motorcycle club raised the $7-thousand dollars for the cruise last year.
Fatal Crash
(Phillips) – The son of a Maine State Senator has died in a vehicle accident in Franklin County. The Sheriff’s Department reports 21-year old Loren Keim failed to stop his pickup truck at the intersection of Rangeley and Weld Roads Saturday, and hit the back end of a tanker truck. He was Republican State Senator Lisa Keim’s son.
Pot Bill Delay
(Augusta) Maine’s Governor has signed the bill delaying legal retail marijuana sales, allowing lawmakers more time to write and implement rules. Representative Louis Luchini sponsored the bill. Before signing the bill LePage says he wanted the liquor and lottery agency to regulate the retail sale of marijuana instead of the agricultural department.
Equipment Malfunction
(Rockland) Rockland’s Fire Chief is warning others in the fire community about an air pack malfunction after one of his firefighters had a close call. Fire Chief Chris Whytock tells Star 97-7 the firefighter was inside a burning building when his breathing equipment failed. Whytock says he did some research after incident and discovered Scott company, which manufactures the airpack, had issued a safety notice on the units. Whytock has sent the notice to several Maine departments to alert them of the safety issue.
Body Update
(Thomaston) The Medical Examiner’s Office and the State Police DNA lab are helping to identify the decomposed remains found in Thomaston last week. Public Safety Department spokesman Steve McCausland says evidence techs returned to the scene to search where the body was found on Route 1 in the wooded area behind the Dunkin Donuts, but no new evidence was found. Once there’s a positive ID, McCausland says detectives will attempt to retrace the man’s footsteps and determine why he was in Knox County. Foul play is not suspected in the man’s death.
Indictment
(Bangor) A Bangor man with a previous criminal record has been indicted by a Penobscot grand jury for allegedly trying to rob a cab driver. WABI-TV reports 27-year-old Brandon Knowles is charged with robbery, burglary and theft for holding up a cab driver in September, though police say he didn’t get any money. Last April Knowles and a woman drove away from Broadway Plaza in Bangor and experienced an adverse reaction to drugs. Emergency responders administered Narcan to revive one of them. He was later charged with unlawful possession of drugs and operating under the influence.
