Motel Theft
(Ellsworth) Police have issued a summons to an Ellsworth woman who allegedly stayed at a local motel and left without paying her bill. Lt Harold Page tells Star 97-7 the Colonial Motel filed the complaint. 56-year-old Rhonda Komchai of Ellsworth allegedly skipped out on her nearly 19-hundred-dollar room bill. She’s due in court March 21st for theft of Services.
Former Chief – Bail Conditions
(Ellsworth) – The former police chief in Bar Harbor can no longer legally drive after 8-o’clock at night or possess alcohol. The Mt. Desert Islander reports those are among the bail conditions imposed on 54-year old Nathan Young after he was arrested twice in December for drunk driving. Because Young refused to take a blood alcohol test after his first arrest in Ellsworth, his license is also suspended. Young is due in court in February on the first OUI arrest.
Bazooka
(Topsham) – The State Police bomb squad has safely hauled away a bazooka shell after its discovery in a condominium parking lot in Topsham. Spokesman Steve McCausland reports to Star 97.7 the shell was a dud. It was used for military training but never had any explosives in it. The condo residents had to stay inside their buildings for several hours while police safely removed the shell.
2nd Bus-Drug Arrest
(Bangor) – The scenario at the bus station in Bangor was familiar this week. An alleged drug dealer got off the bus, and drug agents introduced him to a pair of handcuffs. Now 19-year old Temaur Murdaugh is in jail, the same place 21-year old Tylee Felder ended up after his arrest after his arrest Monday. Drug agents found $3-thousand dollars worth of crack cocaine on Murdaugh when they searched him yesterday.
Plea Withdrawal
(Waterville) – No deal for a Waterville man accused of raping an elderly woman at gunpoint after he broke into her home nearly a year ago. WABI-TV reports 33-year old Mark Halle pled guilty and was supposed to be sentenced today, but he’s withdrawn the plea. Halle was charged with gross sexual assault, burglary and criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon. He’ll go on trial in May.
Grandparent Scam
(Maine) U.S. Senator Susan Collins is warning of an increasing number of complaints reporting a phone scam that targets grandparents. Collins says there are several variations of this so-called “Grandparent Scam,” but typically scammers call an older adult pretending to be a grandchild. The con artist says they urgently need money to cover medical care or a legal problem. In another version of the scam, the criminal calls pretending to be an arresting police officer, a lawyer, or a doctor. Collins says if you believe you’ve been the victim of a scam or fraud aimed at seniors, contact the Aging Committee Fraud Hotline.
Call Center Downsizing
(Orono) – A call center than employs 200-people in Orono will downsize. The NexxLinx center will reduce staffing to 70-employees and relocate to a new building on Godfrey Drive in Orono. The 130-workers who will be out of a job are getting a 20-percent salary increase until their last day at the end of March.
Another Tradewinds
(Orland) A full-service convenience store may be coming to the corner of Route1 and Route 46 on the Orland-Bucksport town line. The Ellsworth American reports owners of Tradewinds Markets, Chuck and Belinda Lawrence, hope to put up a new store with a kitchen and gas pumps as early as this summer. Lawrence tells the newspaper customers have been asking for a store near Bucksport, and the vacant lot in Orland is ideal because of its proximity to Lawrence’s main store in Blue Hill.
Spa Thief
(Rockland) – Police in Rockland have charged a former spa manager with stealing $200-thousand dollars from the health club at the Trade Winds Inn. Village Soup dot-com reports 40-year old Michael Morrison is charge with theft by deception. Detectives allege Morrison would make purchases through Amazon with the company credit card, including a lot of hockey and softball equipment. The state is also investigating $123-thousand dollars in overbilling by the health club to the Maine Care program. The health club reported it lost $128-thousand dollars since 2010.
Equipment Malfunction
(Rockland) Rockland’s Fire Chief is warning others in the fire community about an air pack malfunction after one of his firefighters had a close call. Fire Chief Chris Whytock tells Star 97-7 the firefighter was inside a burning building when his breathing equipment failed and he couldn’t breathe. Fortunately the firefighter was able to escape. It turns out the Scott company which manufactures the airpack had issued a safety notice on the units, but that was not transmitted to all the departments that used Scott airpacks. Chief Whytock has sent the notice to all Maine departments.
