Swan’s Island Electric
(Swan’s Island) The Public Utilities Commission has rejected a proposal for Emera Maine to take over electric service on Swan’s Island and Frenchboro. Fewer than 400 people live on the two islands and overwhelmingly favor dissolving the Swan’s Island Electric Cooperative and buying less expensive electricity from Emera. They also want Emera to take the islands’ 4-hundred-thousand-dollar annual operating costs and spread it amongst all their customers. PUC Administrative Director Harry Lanphear (LAN-fear) says two of the 3 commissioners rejected the stipulation. Once the written order is published about the PUC’s decision, Swan’s Island and the Office of the Public Advocate have 20 days to appeal the ruling.
