Fish Count
(Maine) – It’s no secret fishermen and scientists have clashed in recent years over how to properly estimate fish populations and set the catch quotas that control the bread and butter of Maine fishermen. The Bangor Daily News reports federal scientists now plan to outfit commercial fishermen with equipment used to establish ground fish quotas, in particular when it comes to cod. Some fishermen say the current cod quota does not accurately represent the health of a species they claim is doing better, despite warming waters. But opponents counter fishermen are mainly seeing the places where there are a lot of fish, while overlooking places where the numbers have declined. Commercial boats will reportedly be outfitted with the data collection equipment as early as next year.
