Jax lab Building
(Bar Harbor) – As a crane hoisted a steel beam into place yesterday in Bar Harbor, workers on the new building celebrated the completion of the frame on Jackson Laboratory’s new Center for Biometric Analysis. The ceremony in the frigid air marked a milestone at the building that will eventually house about 200-workers. the expansion project should be complete in about a year. They broke ground on the $14-million dollar building last June. When it’s done, the high tech facility will house 30-new faculty scientists trying to detect subtle signs of disease in research mice.
Skowhegan Robbery
(Skowhegan) – Police in Somerset County are looking for a young man who robbed a pharmacy. The Skowhegan Police Department posts on its Facebook page that the man got away with drugs from the Madison Avenue Rite Aid pharmacy at around 10-o’clock yesterday morning. They’ve posted a surveillance photo, saying the robber did not display a weapon or injure anyone during the holdup. They’ve asked for the public’s help identifying the suspect.
Bangkok – Go Fund Me
(Ellsworth) – A popular Ellsworth Thai cuisine restaurant has asked supporters to help pay property taxes. A go-fund-me page has started for the Bangkok Restaurant with a goal of $25-thousand dollars. The restaurant located just off Downeast Highway in Ellsworth has been in business for nearly 30-years. A bank foreclosed on the owner’s home a few months ago. The page says the money is needed by the end of the month. A day into the fund raising saw more than $800-donated.
New Year, New You
(Ellsworth) Many folks pledge to live a healthier lifestyle as part of their New Year’s resolutions. Maine Coast Memorial Hospital aims to help people keep those vows by offering a free education class on Monday called “New Year, New You – Making Healthy Food Choices”. The hospital’s Diabetes-Nutrition supervisor Amy Henderson will lead the class. If you’re struggling to keep that resolution, Henderson has one simple piece of advice – eat breakfast. The class is from 5:30 to 7:30PM on Monday the 16th in the hospital’s classroom. Register online at: Maine Hospital dot Org.
Murder Sentencing
(Machias) A convicted killer from Houlton will learn his fate next month. 35-year-old Matthew Davis was found guilty or murder and arson in December by a Machias jury. He shot an Oakfield couple in 2013 then set fire to their house. WABI-TV reports the sentencing for Davis is set for February 10th in Houlton. Davis’s trial was moved to Machias when a jury could not be seated in Aroostook County.
I-95 Fatality
(Pittsfield) – A 27-year old man is dead after a tractor trailer struck him as he attempted to cross Interstate 95 in Pittsfield. Dustin Smithurst’s car went off the interstate Sunday night and into the median. A tow truck driver parked on the opposite side of the highway to help and when Smithurst tried to cross the road, the truck hit him. The Life-Flight helicopter flew him to Eastern Maine Medical Center where he died.
Credit Card Fraud
(Orrington) The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a credit card fraud that originated in Orrington. Photos from the Hannaford grocery store in Hampden show a person of interest shopping there during the first week of January. If anyone can identify that person you’re asked to contact police. Assault & Burglary
(Hancock) Deputies arrested a Gouldsboro man following an assault incident Friday. The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office reports to Star 977 they received a call from a Hancock resident saying a man enter his home and assaulted him. After investigating, deputies caught up with 29-year-old Timothy Rivers and arrested him for Assault and Burglary. Deputies transported Rivers to the Hancock County Jail without incident.
Heroin Arrest
(Milbridge) A traffic stop on Route 1 in Milbridge seemed routine until police discovered the operator had drugs. The Milbridge Police Department reports at about 7 o’clock Friday night they pulled over 34-year-old Christopher Smeal of Steuben. He was charged with operating after his license was suspended, violating conditions of release, and unlawful possession of heroin.
Domestic Assault
(Troy) A Carmel man was arrested Saturday after striking his girlfriend with a small club. The Waldo County Sheriff’s Office tells Star 97-7 that deputies met with a woman who reported the domestic disturbance at a home on Ward Hill Road in Troy. Deputies say she and 31-year-old Corey Gerry were in a verbal argument that escalated when he struck the woman in the face with a small club. Gerry was located and arrested for Domestic Assault. He’s being held on $300 bail pending arraignment.
Pills & Protection Order Arrest
(Liberty) Waldo County deputies investigating a man for violating a protection order wound up also arresting him for having pills. The Sheriff’s Office reports a woman called police after 19-year-old Benjamin Rogers contacted her, violating the protection order she has against him. Deputies went to Rogers’ home in Liberty to discuss the matter and discovered Rogers had a plastic bag contain 4 Oxycodone pills in his pocket. Rogers is charged with violating a protection order and possession of Oxycodone. He’s at the Waldo Count Correctional Center where he’s being held without bail pending arraignment.
Assault & Theft Case
(Hollis) State Police have re-opened an unsolved theft and assault case from October at a Hollis convenience store. A victim contacted police in the early morning hours of October 23rd reporting 3 male suspects surrounded him outside the Hollis Lil’ Mart holding metal pipes and tire irons, and demanded money. The victim said he was struck on the arm and the suspects got away with cash. One of the men was identified as 28-year-old Marcus Lefebvre of Waterboro, the other 2 suspects are still at large. Lefebvre was charged with Robbery but he was already in jail for an unrelated situation. His bail was increased because of the new charge. Due to more recent incidents in the area of the Hollis Lil’ Mart, Troopers decided to re-open the investigation because it may be linked to other incidents.
Multi-Car Crash
(Eddington) A multi-car crash in Eddington that sent 3 people to the hospital with minor injuries remains under investigation. It happened Monday morning on Route 9 in front of the Eddington Store. Sergeant Sean McCue with the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department tells WABI-TV that a vehicle trying to turn left into the store parking lot was rear ended by another vehicle – the impact pushed the turning vehicle into on-coming traffic where it hit another car. One of the men involved in the crash was arrested after an altercation between drivers.
Farmhouse Fire
(Northport) A 200-year old farmhouse in Northport was destroyed by fire Friday night. WABI-TV reports homeowner Joy Metcalf had gone to town and when she returned to her Knights Pond Road home it was engulfed in flames. No one was home at the time but a family dog perished in the blaze. Firefighters were able to save the nearby barn. The cause of the fire is undetermined.
Fake Money
(Ellsworth) Police are warning business owners and shoppers that counterfeit 100-dollar bills are circulating the Bangor-Brewer area. In an effort to prevent that money from entering our region, the Ellsworth Police Department says you should be vigilant in checking any large bill with a special pen that detects fake money. They say if you don’t have a pen you can simply run your thumbnail over the clothing on Benjamin Franklin – if it’s real they say you can feel the ridges in the ink. But if it’s counterfeit the bill will feel smooth.
Ice Rink Opens
(Ellsworth) The Ellsworth Rec Department announces the ice skating rink at Knowlton Park officially opens for the season today. The rink failed to open at all last season because of an engineering issue in which one side of the rink was too high, preventing the ice from freezing on unlevel ground. The ice rink will be open from 8am to 8pm starting today, but only when the sign posted at Knowlton Park says it’s okay to go out onto the ice. Shrimp Study
(Portland) Three New England states say they have tapped fishermen to collect samples of a species of shrimp that was the source of a lucrative fishery before it started disappearing. Maine, Massachusetts and New Hampshire have all picked fishermen to harvest Northern shrimp to help gather information about the stock. The fishermen will also be allowed to sell a limited number of the shrimp on the open market.
Scallop Fishing
(Lubec) Maine fishing regulators say they are allowing many of the state’s scallop fishermen to fish for an additional day per week because bad weather has hampered their ability to harvest the shellfish. The state Department of Marine Resources says the dragger boat fleet that operates outside of the protected Cobscook Bay area will be afforded the extra day.
LL Bean & Politics
(Freeport) L.L. Bean likes to stay out of politics. But a political donation by a member of the Bean family is putting the retailer on the defensive. The Maine-based company issued a statement late Sunday after being included in a list of companies to be boycotted for ties to President-elect Donald Trump.
